Menachem Begin Highway

Brief

CLIENT | Moriah Jerusalem Development Company

Section of the Menachem Begin Highway, passing through a crowded urban area, between the Tennis Center, the Jerusalem Mall and the Teddy Soccer Stadium.

The project included three main bridges over the highway, as well as a smaller bridge for a bicycle path. Hundreds of permanent rock anchors and rock bolts were installed as well as a monitoring system.

Preliminary excavation of thick fills required temporary support of existing roads which were kept in service during all stages of the construction process.

Foundation systems for the bridges including drilling of 60 cm piles into rock. The large pedestrian bridge between Teddy Stadium and the mall required installation of vertical rock anchors beneath the bridge abutments.

Many karstic cavities were found during the construction stage, which complicated the drilling and excavation works. Most of the cavities were infilled with clay, but a number of small caves were discovered as well.
